Can you share with us your journey from joining Ignite Architects as a Senior Architect to becoming the first female Director?

It has been transformative. From winning the first bid, to transitioning into a leadership role has really posed challenges along the way, especially  for someone who is used to being the doer. I have learned how important it is to build a high performing culture and a capable team.

As one of the new Directors at Ignite Architects, what is your overarching vision for the firm?

I’m inspired by our team's collective experience and energy. We're dedicated to pioneering work that exceeds industry standards, driven by a belief in design's ability to enrich human experiences and shape a positive future. My goal is to innovate continuously, leveraging technology to empower the next generation of designers and foster a culture of impactful ideas at Ignite.

For me, the best design is honest, simple, and functional. I believe community buildings act as urban acupuncture – they are the catalyst for great learning and growing environments for our future generations. There are many challenges facing today’s architects. Chief among them is how we continue to work in producing great, innovative design solutions within a sector that has ever-growing constraints and regulations, and for stakeholders with conflicting needs. But I think that’s what makes our job so exciting – and such challenges fuel our creativity.

Who or what has been your biggest inspiration throughoutyour career?

SaraFox's (Client rep for Swiss Re – Norman Foster’s ‘The Gherkin' building) and NZ’sIvan Mercep were the two figures that profoundly influenced my architecturaljourney. From Sara, I learned adept management and drive for excellence, fromIvan, humility and empathy. These influences shaped me into an architect whoblends assertive leadership with compassionate guidance, striving for designsthat marry excellence with human-centric values.

What advice would you give to other women aspiring to reach leadership positions in this field?

Navigating architecture as a woman has been challenging yet rewarding. I was able to thrive in a dynamic environment at Ignite with support  from mentors and colleagues over the years. I’d say to others following a similar path – to embrace your uniqueness and seek supportive mentors—opportunities for female leadership in the industry are growing exponentially.

Looking ahead, what are some of the key projects or goalsyou are excited to tackle as Director?

I wantto see our education portfolios evolve. We aim to build on the tertiaryeducation works, also would like to revitalise city centres with urban schools.Embrace cross-sector collaborations, leading the shift towards hybrid spacesthat unite education with other industries for mutual benefit.
